How Long Does the SAP Process Take?

There's no fixed length. The honest answer is that it depends almost entirely on what's recommended and how fast you complete it.

The parts that move quickly

Scheduling an initial evaluation should take days, not weeks. The evaluation itself is one appointment. The follow-up is one more. The paperwork moves at the speed of the SAP's office.

The part that sets the clock

Your SAP recommends education, treatment or both based on your individual evaluation, and the length depends entirely on that recommendation. A responsible SAP won't estimate it before evaluating you. Once made, the recommendation cannot be shortened — not by you, not by your employer, not by the SAP.

The part people underestimate

Waiting to start. Weeks spent deciding are weeks added to the end. The single most effective thing you can do is book the initial evaluation now.

After compliance

Your employer arranges the return-to-duty test, which is usually quick, and then decides about your return. Follow-up testing continues for at least a year afterward.
