What Happens During a SAP Evaluation?

People arrive expecting an interrogation. It's a clinical interview — structured, thorough and confidential.

The format

Roughly 90 minutes, face to face, either in the office or by real-time video where that's permitted. You'll complete intake paperwork beforehand through a secure system.

What you'll be asked

Your history with alcohol and other substances, the circumstances of the violation, your physical and mental health, prior treatment, your work and home situation, and your supports. Standardized screening tools may be used.

Honesty helps you

The evaluation isn't looking for a confession, and there's no pass or fail. An accurate picture produces a recommendation that fits; a minimized one often produces a longer or heavier recommendation than necessary.

Afterward

You receive the recommendation and referrals to qualified providers. The SAP sends the required report to your employer's DER, and you schedule your follow-up evaluation for after you complete the plan.
